The government’s plan to modernise Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has reached a major milestone following the signing of the Engineer-Consultant Contract for the multi-billion-shilling project.

The agreement was signed by Principal Secretary for the State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Teresia Mbaika, on behalf of the Ministry of Roads and Transport, and representatives of Dar Al-Handasah Consultants, marking the start of the project’s implementation phase.

The consultancy firm will be responsible for design review, project management, contract administration and construction supervision to ensure the successful delivery of a modern, efficient, safe and sustainable airport that meets international standards.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir and Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Managing Director and CEO Moses Wekesa, alongside senior government officials and project representatives.

Officials said the modernisation project is expected to transform Kenya’s main international gateway by improving passenger experience, expanding airport capacity and enhancing operational efficiency and safety.

The project is also aimed at strengthening JKIA’s long-term sustainability while positioning Kenya as a leading regional aviation and logistics hub.

The upgraded airport is expected to boost trade, tourism and connectivity, while supporting the country’s broader economic growth ambitions.
