Joseph Edward Root, born on 30 December 1990 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, is one of the finest batsmen of his generation and a cornerstone of the England cricket team.
Raised in the Dore suburb of Sheffield by parents Matt and Helen Root, he developed an early passion for the game through family involvement and local club cricket at Sheffield Collegiate.
A right-handed top-order batsman who occasionally bowls right-arm off-spin, Root has represented England across formats since his international debut in 2012.
He is widely regarded as England’s greatest Test batsman of the modern era, holding the record as the country’s leading run-scorer in Test cricket and ranking among the highest run-scorers in the format’s history.
Root has also featured prominently in limited-overs cricket, contributing significantly to England’s 2019 Cricket World Cup victory as the team’s top run-scorer.
Siblings
Joe has one younger brother, William Thomas Root, better known as Billy Root, born on 5 August 1992 in Sheffield.
The brothers grew up in a cricket-obsessed household, spending countless hours practicing in the family garden and at Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club, where their father Matt had played alongside former England captain Michael Vaughan.
Billy followed a professional path of his own, making his first-class debut for Leeds/Bradford MCCU and later representing Nottinghamshire before establishing himself with Glamorgan, where he continues to play as a left-handed batsman and occasional right-arm off-spinner.
Career
Root’s professional journey began with Yorkshire, for whom he made his first-class debut in 2009.
He progressed rapidly through the England age-group and Lions sides before earning his Test cap against India in Nagpur in December 2012.

An ODI debut followed in January 2013, and he also played T20 Internationals until 2019.
Initially an opener, Root settled into the middle order and quickly established himself as a reliable and technically gifted batsman capable of dominating in all conditions.
He captained the England Test team from 2017 to 2022, leading in a record number of matches for the country and securing notable series victories before stepping down.
After a period focusing on his batting, he was reappointed Test captain in 2026.
Root has scored heavily across formats, accumulating over 14,000 Test runs at an average above 50, with more than 40 centuries, including landmark doubles such as his 218 in his 100th Test against India and higher scores that cemented his place as England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer.
In ODIs he has surpassed 7,500 runs with a strong average and multiple centuries, while his domestic career with Yorkshire continues to provide a platform for consistent performance.
Accolades
Root was named ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year in 2021 after an outstanding calendar year that included over 1,700 runs.
That same year he was selected as Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World and received the PCA Player of the Year award.
Earlier recognition included selection as one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year in 2014.
He has been regularly named in the ICC Test Team of the Year across multiple seasons and has featured in the ODI Team of the Year.
England’s highest individual accolades have also come his way, including Test and Limited-Overs Cricketer of the Year awards.
In the 2020 New Year Honours he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to cricket, later receiving the insignia in a formal ceremony.
As part of the England side he contributed to the historic 2019 Cricket World Cup triumph on home soil.
