    Joseph Simmons, widely known by his stage name Rev Run or Run from the iconic hip-hop group Run-D.M.C., is a pioneering rapper, producer, DJ, and television personality.

    Born Joseph Ward Simmons on November 14, 1964, in Hollis, Queens, New York, he rose to prominence as one of the founding members of Run-D.M.C., a group credited with helping bring hip-hop into the mainstream during the 1980s.

    Beyond his music career, Simmons became an ordained minister, adopting the Rev Run moniker, and gained further fame through the MTV reality series Run’s House, which showcased his family life.

    Joseph has two older brothers.

    His eldest brother, Danny Simmons, is a respected artist known for his work in Neo-African Abstract Expressionism, as well as a painter, author, and poet.

    Danny has been involved in philanthropy through co-founding the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation alongside his brothers.

    The middle brother, Russell Simmons, is a prominent hip-hop mogul and entrepreneur best recognized as the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, which played a crucial role in launching numerous influential artists and shaping the industry.

    Growing up in Queens, the three brothers shared a household that fostered creativity and ambition, with Russell’s early ventures in music production directly influencing Joseph’s entry into the rap scene.

    Career

    Simmons co-founded Run-D.M.C. in the early 1980s with Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, blending rap with rock elements in groundbreaking ways.

    The group achieved massive success with albums like Raising Hell and hits such as “Walk This Way,” a collaboration with Aerosmith that bridged genres and boosted hip-hop’s popularity.

    After Run-D.M.C.’s heyday, Simmons transitioned into ministry, becoming ordained and incorporating faith into his public persona.

    He starred in the family-oriented reality show Run’s House from 2005 to 2009, offering an intimate look at his life, marriage, and parenting.

    In later years, he has appeared in additional reality programming, including HGTV’s Rev Run’s Renovations and shows on the Cooking Channel and Travel Channel like Rev Run’s Sunday Suppers and Rev Run’s Around The World.

    He has also authored books, co-hosted talk shows, and continued producing music and motivational content.

    Accolades

    Throughout his career, Simmons has earned numerous accolades reflecting his impact on music and culture.

    As a member of Run-D.M.C., he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, recognizing the group’s pioneering contributions to hip-hop.

    The trio received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

    Run-D.M.C.’s album Raising Hell went triple platinum, and their collaboration “Walk This Way” became a landmark crossover hit.

    Simmons’ influence extends beyond awards, as his work helped establish hip-hop as a dominant force in global music and inspired generations of artists.
