There was nationwide celebration after 22-year-old environmentalist Truphena Muthoni set a new Guinness World Record by hugging a tree continuously for 72 hours.
The young wildlife activist began the challenge on December 8 and completed it without eating or sleeping for three straight days. Her goal was to surpass her previous record of 48 hours and use the attempt as a peaceful protest against deforestation.
Truphena explained that the demonstration was meant to send a message of unity and compassion. She said the act of tree-hugging is therapeutic and helps raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.
Her record-breaking attempt attracted national attention and earned support from leaders and the public. Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga officially launched the three-day challenge and encouraged her throughout the event. Pan-Africanist and legal scholar PLO Lumumba visited her on the second day, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua congratulated her on social media.
Both mainstream and online media covered the event, and hundreds of locals gathered outside the Nyeri Governor’s office to cheer her on and offer emotional support.
Kenyans also stepped forward with generous gifts to honour her determination. A betting company pledged Ksh1 million for her achievement, while another well-wisher promised Ksh100,000 to help her file the record with the Guinness World Records organisation. A mobile phone company offered her a brand-new Samsung Galaxy Fold 7, and a beauty shop gifted her a skincare package and perfumes. A local fashion designer promised her custom-made suits for three months.
In addition, a tours and travel company offered Truphena a fully paid three-day holiday at the Kenyan Coast together with her guardian or parent.
