Jubilee Party has hit back at President William Ruto following his criticism of former President Uhuru Kenyatta over remarks about the disputed 2022 General Election.
In a statement on Monday, Jubilee Secretary-General Moitalel Ole Kenta criticised Ruto for addressing political issues from a church pulpit, arguing that places of worship should be reserved for truth, humility and spiritual reflection.
Kenta said it was ironic for the Head of State to use a church setting to lecture political leaders on decorum and restraint while, in his view, presiding over a government facing criticism over economic hardship, taxation and unfulfilled promises.
“It is the height of political irony when the Head of State stands at the pulpit of a church, a sanctuary reserved for truth, humility, and spiritual reflection, to castigate other leaders for improper decorum and reckless utterances,” Kenta said.
He accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of using religious platforms to settle political scores and avoid scrutiny over its record in government.
“To stand before a congregation and lecture the nation on decorum, while presiding over a regime that has subjected millions to crippling economic hardship, punitive taxation, and broken promises, reveals a profound detachment from reality,” Kenta said.
He further accused the administration of hypocrisy, arguing that the government lacked the moral authority to lecture other leaders on accountability and governance.
Kenta described the Kenya Kwanza administration as a government built on what he termed “unfulfilled commitments, institutional arrogance, and systemic failure.”
“Kenyans are neither blind nor naive. They remember precisely what transpired during the last General Election, and no amount of state-sponsored propaganda, political theater, or pulpit politics will rewrite that history. Kenyans know better!” he said.
The remarks followed a renewed debate over the 2022 presidential election after Uhuru questioned why his administration continued to feature in political discussions nearly four years after he handed over power.
Speaking during a Jubilee Party leadership handover in Nairobi on September 22, Uhuru said he remained convinced that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga had won the 2022 presidential election.
The Supreme Court, however, unanimously upheld Ruto’s victory after Odinga challenged the presidential election results.
Uhuru also questioned why political leaders continued to discuss his record instead of focusing on governing the country.
He said his administration had peacefully handed over power following the Supreme Court’s decision on the election petition.
Ruto responded to the remarks during a church service on Sunday, criticising leaders who continue to discuss an election held four years ago.
“The election was held four years ago, but because of being confused, you come and speak incoherent things,” Ruto said.
Although the President did not mention Uhuru by name, his remarks came five days after the former President questioned why he continued to feature in political discussions nearly four years after leaving office.
