Julia Michaels, born Julia Carin Cavazos on November 13, 1993, in Davenport, Iowa, is an American singer and songwriter.

Raised in Santa Clarita, California, after moving there with her family at a young age, Michaels discovered her passion for music early, starting to sing at 12 and writing songs shortly after.

Her Puerto Rican and Mexican heritage, inherited from her father, Juan Manuel Cavazos (who later changed his name to John Michaels for his acting career), adds a rich cultural layer to her identity and music.

With a career that began as a songwriter for major artists, she transitioned into a solo artist, gaining widespread recognition.

    Siblings

Julia has one sibling, an older sister named Jaden Michaels, who is also a talented songwriter and singer.

Jaden has carved out her own path in the music industry, contributing to songs for artists like Demi Lovato, Carly Rae Jepsen, Naya Rivera, and Lea Michele.

Growing up, Julia often looked up to Jaden, who was considered the “singer” in the family during their early years.

Julia would accompany her mother and Jaden to vocal and dance lessons, which sparked her own interest in music.

Despite their close bond, Julia has mentioned in interviews that she and Jaden were not particularly close during childhood, partly due to their parents’ divorce when Julia was young.

Her early work included co-writing the theme song for the Disney Channel series Austin & Ally with songwriter Joleen Belle.

By 19, she collaborated with Lindy Robbins, penning hits like “Fire Starter” for Demi Lovato and “Miss Movin’ On” for Fifth Harmony.

Her songwriting prowess led to credits on chart-topping tracks such as Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and Selena Gomez’s “Lose You to Love Me,” both of which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2017, Michaels stepped into the spotlight as a solo artist with her debut single “Issues,” which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned quintuple platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Her debut EP, Nervous System (2017), showcased her raw lyricism, followed by Inner Monologue Part 1 (2019) and her first full-length album, Not in Chronological Order (2021).

Michaels has also been a featured artist on tracks like JP Saxe’s “If the World Was Ending” and Clean Bandit’s “I Miss You,” and she co-wrote songs for Disney’s 2023 animated film Wish.

    Accolades

Michaels has received six Grammy Award nominations, including two for Song of the Year (for “Issues” and “If the World Was Ending”) and Best New Artist in 2018.

Her work has also earned nominations from the MTV Video Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and American Music Awards.

With multiple platinum-certified singles and a reputation for crafting emotionally resonant songs, Michaels has solidified her status as a leading figure in pop music.
