    Early Life

Elisabeth Murdoch was born on August 22, 1968, in Sydney, Australia. She was named after her grandmother, a noted philanthropist. Murdoch attended The Brearley School in New York City and later Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, where she completed her college education.

    Early Career

Elisabeth began her media career managing program acquisitions at FX Networks, her father’s cable channel. In 1994, she and her first husband, Elkin Kwesi Pianim, purchased two California NBC affiliate stations, KSBW and KSBY, using a $35 million loan from Rupert Murdoch. Within 18 months, they sold the stations for a $12 million profit.

    BSkyB Leadership

Murdoch then moved to the UK and joined BSkyB, the British broadcaster where her father shared the CEO role with Sam Chisholm. She eventually became Managing Director, helping transform BSkyB into one of the UK’s most profitable companies. Her tenure included notable projects such as the sponsorship of London’s Millennium Dome and involvement in her father’s unsuccessful bid for Manchester United. Murdoch left BSkyB in 2000 to focus on her own ventures.

    Shine Group and Sister

In March 2001, Elisabeth founded Shine Group, a television production and distribution company. She owned 80% of Shine, with 15% held by Lord Alli and 5% by BSkyB. The company produced globally recognized programs including MasterChef, Broadchurch, and The Bridge. In 2011, she sold Shine to News Corporation but remained as Chairman and CEO.

In 2019, Elisabeth launched Sister, a new international production company with offices in London and Los Angeles, further solidifying her influence in the media industry.

    Personal Life

Elisabeth Murdoch has been married three times:

    1. Elkin Kwesi Pianim (1993–1998) – two daughters, Cornelia and Anna.
    2. Matthew Freud (2001–2014) – two children; Freud is the great-grandson of Sigmund Freud.
    3. Keith Tyson (married 2017) – artist.

She resides in St John’s Wood, London, where she purchased a £38.5 million home in 2014. In 2022, she was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to arts and philanthropy.
