Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma urged investigations into the violence witnessed in Homa Bay on Sunday during a rally by the Linda Mwananchi movement.
The legislator, who is already in the eye of a storm over remarks made in the aftermath of the unrest, urged security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the violence and identify those responsible.
Kaluma in a statement, accused Siaya Governor James Orengo, Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Embakasi East MP Babu Owino of being directly involved in activities that contributed to the unrest.
He also alleged that former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were among individuals backing the group allegedly involved in causing chaos.
At least two people, including a police officer, reportedly died during the unrest, while several vehicles were torched.
On Tuesday, Kaluma challenged investigators to establish the ownership of vehicles allegedly used during the incident and identify hotels and other premises where individuals linked to the violence may have stayed or held meetings.
“Let there be a decisive and comprehensive investigation into the people, vehicles and premises involved in this incident,” Kaluma said.
He further questioned the conduct of the police, calling for investigations into allegations that some officers or commanders may have been compromised.
“We must establish whether there was any failure, negligence or compromise within the security apparatus that allowed the violence to escalate,” he said.
The MP also alleged that large sums of money were used to mobilise people and finance the violence, challenging investigators to establish the source of the funds, when they were allegedly received and how they were distributed.
“Who funded the mobilisation? Who received the money, when was it received and how was it distributed? These are questions that an investigation must answer,” Kaluma said.
He also called for scrutiny of alleged coordinators involved in mobilising people for the Homa Bay rally, including the number of people recruited and payments allegedly made to them.
A significant part of his statement focused on Governor Gladys Wanga, whom Kaluma claimed was the target of an alleged political scheme aimed at undermining her leadership and destabilising Homa Bay County.
“God saved Governor Wanga. God saved Homa Bay,” Kaluma said.
He alleged that the violence was not spontaneous but formed part of a broader political plan to create instability in the county and weaken the governor politically.
Kaluma called on security agencies to pursue the allegations without fear or favour, saying accountability was necessary to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
“Those who planned, financed, facilitated or executed the violence must be identified and held accountable,” he said.
His remarks come amid heightened political tensions in Homa Bay, with rival political factions trading accusations over the violence and the conduct of political rallies.
He has since been summoned by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission for questioning.
The allegations remain claims by the MP and would require independent investigation and verification. No criminal responsibility can be established against the individuals named without evidence and due process.
