Kenya Airways (KQ) has cancelled several flights to and from the United States due to severe winter weather, including heavy snowstorms affecting large parts of the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the airline said it had cancelled a flight from Nairobi to New York scheduled for January 24, and the return flight from New York to Nairobi on January 25, 2026.

“The safety of our guests and crew remains our highest priority,” Kenya Airways said, adding that its teams are closely monitoring the situation.

“Our teams are actively monitoring the situation and will keep our customers updated as we continue to assess and provide further guidance,” the statement read.

The airline also warned that additional flights could be affected. Kenya Airways said a flight from Nairobi to New York scheduled for Sunday, January 25, and another from New York to Nairobi on Monday, January 26, 2026, may also be disrupted due to the worsening weather conditions.

The cancellations come as the United States braces for a major winter storm expected to affect more than 200 million people. The US National Weather Service said the storm is bringing heavy snowfall, freezing rain and extremely low temperatures across many states.

Several major cities, including New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Nashville and Memphis, are forecast to receive heavy snow. Parts of the northeastern US, including New York City, could receive more than 30 centimetres of snow, with dangerous wind chills expected.

US authorities have warned of travel disruptions, flight delays and cancellations, with more than 3,000 flights already cancelled nationwide. Several states have declared states of emergency, while airport authorities have urged travellers to postpone non-essential travel.
