Kenya Airways has increased the number of flights to Kisumu over the weekend as the body of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga is expected to be transported to the lakeside city tomorrow.
In a statement posted on X, the national carrier said it had added flights to accommodate the rising travel demand ahead of Raila’s arrival.
“We’ve increased our flight frequency to Kisumu over the weekend to accommodate the high travel demand,” the airline announced.
According to Kenya Airways, additional flights will operate on Friday, October 17, at 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., while on Saturday, October 18, flights scheduled for 6:50 a.m. and 8:05 a.m. will be upgraded to Boeing 737 aircraft. On Sunday, October 19, and Monday, October 20, more flights will also be upgraded to larger aircraft to handle the surge in passengers.
“We remain committed to ensuring seamless travel for all our guests,” Kenya Airways stated.
Meanwhile, the National Funeral Committee, chaired by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, revised the public viewing plans for Raila’s body, moving it from Moi Stadium to Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu.
The decision was made following the massive turnout witnessed in Nairobi, where large crowds gathered at Parliament on Thursday, forcing officials to transfer the viewing to Kasarani Stadium.
The Kasarani event, however, turned chaotic due to overcrowding, with two people reported dead after police fired in the air and used teargas to control the situation.
On Friday morning, Raila’s body lay in state at Parliament Buildings, where President William Ruto led national leaders in paying their final respects.
Later, the body was moved to Nyayo Stadium for a state funeral service attended by dignitaries from across the region.
Raila, who passed away while receiving treatment in India, will be laid to rest on Sunday at his home in Bondo, Siaya County.
