Kenya Automates Jute Product Import Licenses and Permits

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has automated the application process for jute product import licenses and permits to make trade easier and improve business efficiency.

According to AFA Director-General Bruno Linyiru, the new system will take effect from January 1, 2026.

The licenses can be applied for through the AFA Integrated Management Information System (AFA-IMIS), while permits will be processed via the KENTRADE Trade Facilitation Platform (TFP).

The move follows the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development’s Gazette notice number 14820 of November 15, 2024, which classified jute as a scheduled crop to be developed, regulated, and promoted by AFA.

The portals for applications can be accessed at AFA-IMIS and KENTRADE TFP.

Jute product imports are rising globally, with major importers including the United States, India, and Uganda.

In Kenya, companies such as CORE K Ltd. and Core (U) Ltd. import jute bags for coffee packing, promotional purposes, and general use, primarily from Bangladesh, India, and China.

The growing demand for jute is driven by a shift away from non-recyclable plastics and an increase in eco-friendly corporate initiatives.

Recent trade restrictions by India on certain jute products from Bangladesh, allowing imports only through specific seaports, are also shaping the market.
