Several parts of the country are expected to receive rain over the next five days, the Kenya Meteorological Department has announced.

In a weekend weather advisory issued on Friday, December 5, Kenya Met said most parts of the country will remain dry and sunny. However, regions in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Northeastern region and the South-eastern lowlands are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall between December 6 and December 9.

In the Highlands East, moderate rains are expected in parts of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi counties. Kenya Met said these areas will experience cloudy mornings followed by afternoon showers and sunny breaks later in the day.

Counties around the Lake Victoria Basin are also expected to receive rainfall. These include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira. Similar weather is forecast in parts of the Rift Valley and western regions, including Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

In the South-eastern lowlands, light showers are expected in Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland areas of Tana River County, from Sunday, December 7, to Tuesday, December 9. Other days in these areas are expected to be mostly cloudy.

Kenya Met said the rest of the country, especially coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale, will remain mostly sunny and dry during the period.

The department also warned residents in Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi to prepare for very cold nights.

At the same time, very high daytime temperatures are expected in northern Kenya and along the coast. Temperatures in northern counties are forecast to rise to about 37°C, while coastal areas could experience daytime temperatures of up to 33°C.
