Kenya has officially secured the hosting rights for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after the government paid Ksh1.6 billion to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed the payment while appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Sports at Bunge Towers on Tuesday, April 8.
He said the funds were released by the National Treasury to meet CAF’s requirements and to avoid further delays in preparations for the tournament, which is scheduled to begin in August.
“The government is committed to meeting the financial obligations to CAF to guarantee eligibility as hosts. To this end, a payment of Ksh1.6 billion was made to CAF as per the terms that were agreed on,” Mvurya told the Committee.
The announcement marks a major step forward for Kenya, which will co-host the tournament with neighbouring countries Uganda and Tanzania.
CHAN is considered a crucial test event ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the three countries will also co-host under the joint “Pamoja” bid.
“These tournaments represent a historic milestone for Kenya, demonstrating our commitment to sports excellence, infrastructural development, and advancement of Kenya in the continental football space,” said Mvurya.
Key venues for the CHAN tournament in Kenya include the Talanta Sports City and the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi. Other stadiums — Nyayo, Ulinzi, and Police Sacco grounds — will serve as training venues for participating teams.
