Kenyan police officers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been awarded United Nations Service Medals in recognition of their work in promoting peace and protecting civilians.
The medal ceremony was held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the UNMISS compound in Juba, South Sudan.
Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja praised the officers for their discipline, professionalism, and dedication while serving in a challenging environment. His message was delivered by the Kenyan Contingent Commander, SSP Mbatian Kantai.
The Inspector-General said the officers have played a key role in protecting civilians, supporting humanitarian operations, securing important facilities, and helping resolve conflicts at the community level.
“You have supported humanitarian work, protected key sites, and helped promote peace at the grassroots. Your actions reflect the core mission of UNMISS, which is to protect civilians and build lasting peace,” the message read.
A total of 27 Kenyan police officers received the medals for their service as part of the UNMISS International Police Component.
The medals were presented by Officer-in-Charge of Police, Commissioner Jeremiah Togba Massaqoui. The event was attended by senior UNMISS officials, diplomats, and representatives of the Kenyan government.
Among those present were Benedict Watamba, representing the Kenyan Ambassador, Major General (Rtd) Aggrey Owino, Chairperson of the Revitalised Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), UN Police leaders, and Col Martin Owino, the Defence Attaché at the Kenyan Embassy in South Sudan.
Some of the officers recognised include SSP Millicent Alambo, the UNMISS Gender Adviser, SSP Kioko Munyambu, Team Leader of the Anti-Cattle Raiding Specialised Police Unit, SSP Magongo Amadiva, SP Kipsang Kipkazi, and ASP Silas Kiptoo, among others.
