Keyshia Cole is a prominent American singer, songwriter, television personality, and actress known for her soulful R&B music that often draws from personal experiences of love, heartbreak, and family struggles.

Born on October 15, 1981, in Oakland, California, she was originally named Keyshia Myeshia Johnson.

Her biological mother was Francine “Frankie” Lons, who struggled with substance abuse, leading to Keyshia being placed in foster care at a young age.

At two years old, she was adopted by family friends Leon and Yvonne Cole, which led her to take the surname Cole.

She was estranged from her biological father, boxing trainer Virgil Hunter, until later in life.

    Siblings

Keyshia’s siblings include a mix of biological and adoptive relationships, reflecting her layered family history.

Her older biological sister is Neffeteria “Neffe” Pugh, born in December 1979 in California.

Neffe gained public attention through appearances on Keyshia’s reality shows and later starred in the BET spin-off “Frankie & Neffe” alongside their mother.

She has worked as a producer, author, and actress, and while the sisters have had public feuds over the years, they have also shown moments of reconciliation.

Keyshia’s younger biological sister is Elite Noel, a singer-songwriter from Oakland who has appeared on Keyshia’s reality series but maintains a lower public profile.

On the adoptive side, Keyshia has a brother named Sean Cole, also known as rapper Nutt-So, who is the son of her adoptive parents Leon and Yvonne Cole.

Sean, from Oakland, introduced a young Keyshia to the music scene by connecting her with MC Hammer when she was 12, allowing her to record background vocals.

    Career

Cole’s career began to take shape in her teens when she pursued music in Los Angeles, providing background vocals for artists like MC Hammer.

She signed with A&M Records at 21 under executive Ron Fair and released her debut album, “The Way It Is,” in 2005.

The album achieved platinum status, driven by hits like “I Changed My Mind” and “I Should Have Cheated.”

Her breakthrough came with her second album, “Just like You” in 2007, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and spawned multiple number-one R&B singles, including the platinum “Let It Go” featuring Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim, “I Remember,” and “Heaven Sent.”

Subsequent albums like “A Different Me” (2008), “Woman to Woman” (2012), and others solidified her as a consistent chart-topper in R&B and hip-hop fusions.

Beyond music, Keyshia starred in reality shows such as “Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is” on BET, which documented her life, family, and career, and later appeared in acting roles, including a Lifetime biopic where she portrayed herself.

Her raw, emotional delivery and relatable storytelling have kept her relevant in the industry for over two decades.

    Accolades

Cole is a four-time Grammy Award nominee, with nods including Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “Heaven Sent” and Best R&B Song, as well as Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for earlier works.

She has received nominations from major platforms like the BET Awards (multiple times across categories like Best Female R&B Artist and Best Collaboration), American Music Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, and NAACP Image Awards, where she secured a win.

Additional honors include ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards for songs like “Love” and “Let It Go,” BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards for collaborations, and platinum certifications from the RIAA for several singles and albums.
