Residents of Kisumu town are set to benefit from the expansion of the county’s sewerage system at a cost of Sh 146 million.
Environment, Water and Natural Resources Cabinet Secretary Prof. Judy Wakhungu said the project includes the construction of both primary and secondary sedimentation tanks, a sludge digestion unit and a trickling filter bed.
In a speech read on her behalf by a senior administrator in the Ministry Julius Kandie during the ground-breaking ceremony the Cabinet Secretary said the improved sewerage system would significantly reduce pollution load in the Lake Victoria.
“We are aware that pollution is one of the factors that contribute to the infestation of the lake with water hyacinth, hence this activity will significantly contribute to improving the lake’s eco-system” she said.
She noted that the expansion of the sewerage facility expected to take five months before completion would increase the processing of sewage by more than 2,500 cubic meters per day.
The CS urged the Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (KIWASCO) and the County Government to ensure that the contract did the work to specification and ensure that standards and quality was not compromised.
The proposed expansion exercise is expected to commence soon at Kisat area where the contractor, Keromatt Limited was already on site.
The Lake Victoria Environmental Management Programme II National Coordinator Francisca Owour said the projected funded through a Government loan from the World Bank would improve the dilapidated sanitary situation in the lakeside city where cases of outbreaks cholera and other water borne diseases were common.
