KPA plans Moyale Dry Port, Lake Turkana ferry services to boost LAPSSET trade corridor

The Kenya Ports Authority unveiled plans to establish a dry port in Moyale and introduce ferry services on Lake Turkana in a major infrastructure push aimed at strengthening the Lamu Port–South Sudan–Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor and unlocking trade across northern Kenya and the wider region.

The initiative, being undertaken in collaboration with the county governments of Marsabit County and Turkana County, is expected to improve regional connectivity, facilitate cargo movement and stimulate economic growth.

KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto, accompanied by Mohamud Mohamed, toured proposed sites in Loiyangalani for the construction of the dry port and a modern jetty that will support both cargo and passenger ferry services.

Speaking during the inspection, Capt. Ruto said the projects form part of the government’s broader vision of transforming the LAPSSET Corridor into a catalyst for regional economic integration.

“What we are planning is part of the nation’s vision to develop not only urban centres along the LAPSSET Corridor but also broader initiatives to accelerate economic integration across the region,” he said.

The proposed ferry services on Lake Turkana are expected to enhance transport links between communities along the lake while improving trade between Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
The Moyale Dry Port, on the other hand, is intended to serve as a logistics hub that will ease cargo handling and facilitate cross-border commerce.

Governor Mohamud welcomed the projects, commending President William Ruto for prioritising development in northern Kenya.

He also praised the Kenya Ports Authority for fast-tracking the projects, saying they would significantly boost economic activity in both Marsabit and Turkana counties once ferry operations begin on Lake Turkana.

The KPA delegation also included General Manager for Infrastructure Development Mathews Amuti, Manager for Corporate Planning and Strategy Mohamed Golicha, and Manager for Ferry Operations Paul Koech.
