Laikipia University has temporarily closed its campus following unrest by students over the death of a first-year student.
The demonstrations began on Saturday, March 21, 2026, after Hillary Vulimu, a first-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media, died in an accident.
According to the university, Vulimu was struck by a rock during a hiking trip on Friday, March 20.
Fellow students quickly transported him to Michael Nursing Home in Subukia for first aid before he was referred to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital for further treatment. The university confirmed that he passed away at the hospital while receiving care.
“The Dean of Students visited the hospital to oversee necessary arrangements, and the student’s parents were informed,” the university said in a statement.
“As a community, we are devastated by this loss. We appeal to students and the entire university community to show support and tolerance at this time of sorrow.”
During the protests, students raised concerns about delayed ambulance services provided by the university.
Following a special meeting on Monday, March 23, 2026, the university announced the immediate closure of the campus.
The decision comes after reports of student unrest, engagement with police, and property destruction along the Laikipia-Nyahururu Highway.
“Consequently, all students are required to vacate the university premises immediately,” the notice reads.
The university said that security personnel, in coordination with government agencies, will supervise the evacuation to ensure compliance.
The notice also warned that students who fail to comply with the directive will face disciplinary action in line with university regulations.
