The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has announced the death of Craig, one of Africa’s most famous super tuskers, at the age of 54.
According to a KWS statement, Craig passed away on the morning of January 3, 2026.
Born in January 1972 to the matriarch Cassandra of the CB family, Craig was one of the last remaining super tuskers in Africa. These rare elephants are known for having tusks weighing over 45 kilograms (100 lbs) each. With only a handful left, Craig was a living symbol of Africa’s natural heritage.
Craig fathered several calves, ensuring that his bloodline and gentle character continue in future generations.
“Beyond his extraordinary tusks, Craig was deeply loved for his calm and dignified nature. He often paused patiently as visitors photographed and filmed him,” KWS said. “He became a true ambassador of Amboseli and a symbol of successful conservation.”
In 2021, Craig was adopted by East African Breweries Limited (EABL) through the Tusker brand, highlighting his global fame. His long life was made possible by decades of protection from KWS, conservation partners, and local communities, including continuous monitoring, anti-poaching measures, and habitat preservation.
