Legislators Call for Additional Funds to Improve Junior Secondary School Infrastructure

The National Assembly Select Committee on the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) has recommended an increase in budgetary allocation to boost learning infrastructure in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).

The Committee, chaired by Eldama Ravine MP Musa Sirma, made the call during an inspection tour of school projects in Nairobi. The projects, which include classroom blocks constructed through a Sh1 billion allocation, are aimed at supporting the rollout of JSS in the capital.

Public school infrastructure maintenance is also among the projects funded by NG-CDF.

During the Nairobi visit, the Committee toured schools in Westlands, Dagoretti South, Lang’ata, and Kibra constituencies.

In Westlands, area MP Timothy Wanyonyi joined the team at Westlands Primary School. Dagoretti South MP John Kiaroe hosted the Committee at Ndurarua and Kinyanjui Road primary schools, while Kibra MP Peter Orero welcomed them to Ayany Primary School, where new classroom blocks are under construction. In Lang’ata, the team inspected a new laboratory and classroom block at Madaraka Primary School.

Mr. Sirma noted that many schools, especially in densely populated areas, are overcrowded and need more facilities.
“I have seen a class with over 90 students. That is very hectic for both the learners and the teachers. We need to make learning easier and more efficient,” he said.
