Lightning kills 16-year-old girl in Migori

A 16-year-old girl was killed in a lightning strike in a village in Ogwedhi, Migori County.

The victim was a form two student at Kameji High School. Police said she was struck by lightning in the Sagegi area as she left a farm. It was raining when the incident happened on October 22, 2025 in the evening, police said.

The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

Such incidents are common in the area amid calls to install gadgets to contain them.

Officials say tens of people are killed in lightning strikes in different places in the country which has raised the need for the gadgets to be installed to contain the menace.

Meanwhile, five people were killed in separate road accidents in the country. The victims included three pedestrians, a driver and a pillion passenger.

Police said ten people were injured in the accidents and included four pedestrians, three pillion passengers, a driver, a rider and a passenger.

The victims are admitted in various hospitals in stable conditions, police said.

For instance, a female pedestrian was killed by a speeding car as she crossed the Thika Highway in Thika Town.

The victim identified as Judy Mwangi was a salonist in the area.

Along Ahero-Kisumu highway, another pedestrian identified as Collins Otieno, 31 was hit and killed by a speeding car.

The victim died on the spot after the Wednesday evening incident, police said.

Police said they are investigating the accidents so far reported.

Fatal accidents kill more than 4,000 people in the country in a year. The accidents also leave tens with serious injuries that have an impact on families.

There is a continuous campaign to address the menace.
