Longhorn Publishers has announced major changes to its board of directors, bringing in new leadership while confirming the exit of a key shareholder from its board role.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, the publisher said Centum Investment Company Plc resigned from the board on August 22 but clarified that the firm has not withdrawn its shares from the company.
Following the changes, Thomas Omondi was appointed as an alternative director to Fredrick Murimi.
At the same time, renowned educationist Dr. Sara Ruto was named a non-executive director, effective August 22.
The company said the appointments were made in compliance with the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) regulations, the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) listing rules, and the Companies Act, 2015.
Dr. Ruto, who brings more than 30 years of experience in education policy and reform across Africa, has served in several high-profile roles. She was the Chief Administrative Secretary at Kenya’s Ministry of Education and the CEO of the People’s Action for Learning (PAL) Network. Currently, she works with Echidna Giving, supporting strategic grant making, and serves on a number of boards, including the Kisii University Council and UNESCO’s International Institute for Educational Planning.
Her career began as a language and literature teacher before she became a lecturer and researcher at Kenyatta University, where she focused on school reform and girls’ education. She later founded Uwezo Kenya, a pioneering initiative that assessed children’s learning levels through citizen-led assessments. The initiative expanded to Uganda and Tanzania, inspiring communities to ask: “Are Our Children Learning?”
Under her leadership, Uwezo grew into the PAL Network, now active in 17 countries and recognized globally for advancing foundational learning. She has also been honored with the Elder of the Burning Spear award for her service to education.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Ruto to the board,” said Prof. Githu Muigai, chairman of the Board of Directors.
