High Court Magistrate Kennedy Cheruyuiot has ordered a three-day detention for a man who impersonated Deputy President William Ruto’s wife, Mrs Rachael Ruto.

According to the Investigating Officer George Chai, the man – Michael Mito Atito, is claimed to have extorted money from well-wishers using a Facebook page with Mrs Ruto’s profile.

On the page, he stated that the money raised was aimed at helping the less fortunate by giving out free lorries.

Mito, together with three others, who are yet to be arrested, have been accused of fraudulently obtaining money raised by the public for the purchase and registration of the said lorries.

Appearing before the court, Officer Chai declared that the suspect had committed an offense of impersonation contrary to section 105 of the penal code laws of Kenya.

“The suspect has opened a Facebook account and impersonated Rachel where he claimed that he was supporting the less fortune by giving out free lorries that were to be registered in the names of the beneficiaries,” Chai revealed.

Additionally, Chai asked the court to detain the accused at the Central Police Station for four days starting February 5 to February 9, in order to allow him enough time to finalize his investigations.

Following the request by Officer Chai, Magistrate Kennedy Cheruyuiot detained Mito for three days.
