Police in Murang’a South are investigating an incident in which a 63-year-old man was robbed of Sh700,000 shortly after withdrawing the money from a bank in Kenol.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at around 2:30 p.m. in the Kimololi area.
The victim, a Kimololi resident, withdrew cash from Equity Bank’s Kenol branch. He then called his 25-year-old son, Comfort Gift, to pick him up and take him home on his motorcycle.
While they were travelling home, their motorcycle was allegedly blocked by a vehicle, a Toyota Premio.
Three men reportedly emerged from the vehicle, armed with rungus and a knife, and ordered the two to lie down.
The suspects allegedly took Wachira’s cash, punctured the motorcycle’s front tyre and drove away towards Kenol town.
Police officers visited the scene in Kimololi and the bank as part of preliminary investigations.
At the scene, officers documented a hole punched in the motorcycle’s front tyre. Investigators also visited Equity Bank Kenol branch, where preliminary inquiries indicated that Wachira had withdrawn the money at an open teller.
Police are continuing investigations to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Such incidents happen out of an inside job, police investigations have shown.
Police say they have cracked dozens of such incidents and some are pending under probe.
Some of the attackers hang in banking halls to monitor activities before striking.
Others are usually armed with prior information on the transactions before they strike their targets after they leave banks.
Police say they are working to crack the emerging gangs behind the trend.
In some incidents, police and bank staff have been found to be involved.
