maragaChief Justice David Maraga has called upon the Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet to beef up Judiciary staff security after Kwale Chief Magistrate Doreen Mulekyo was carjacked.

Ms Mulekyo was reportedly attacked on Thursday night at Diani shopping centre and managed to escape unhurt.

“I call upon the police to ensure the culprits are arrested. We want to see better security for all our staff, and indeed all Kenyans,” the CJ said.

“Last night’s carjacking of Mulekyo was a shocking incident to the entire Judiciary. We thank God she wasn’t hurt,” he added.

In October, Deputy Chief Justice, Philomena Mwilu’s bodyguard was shot three times by persons who have since been positively identified.

The incident came at a peculiar time, when the Supreme Court was handling sensitive cases involving the October 26 Presidential re-election.

Many in the opposition felt that the attack was meant to send a message to Ms Mwilu who on October 25 was part of the bench hearing a petition by Activist Okiya Omtatah that could have seen the repeat election rescheduled.

Maraga had after nullifying the August 8 presidential election warned of threatening messages to the judges and their families.

The CJ noted that the Judiciary was prepared to ‘pay the ultimate price to protect the constitution and the rue of law.’
