Marcus Foligno is an American-born Canadian professional ice hockey player who currently serves as a winger and alternate captain for the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League.

Nicknamed “Moose” for his physical style of play, Foligno stands at 6 feet 3 inches and weighs around 226 pounds, making him a formidable presence on the ice as a power forward known for his hitting, leadership, and gritty contributions in the bottom-six role.

Born on August 10, 1991, in Buffalo, New York, he holds dual citizenship through his Canadian parents and has represented Canada internationally, including at the World Junior Championship.

Foligno comes from a prominent hockey family, as the son of former NHL player Mike Foligno, and has built a reputation for his physicality, defensive reliability, and team-first attitude.

    Siblings

Marcus’ siblings include his older brother Nick Foligno, a longtime NHL veteran and former captain of the Chicago Blackhawks who joined him as a teammate on the Minnesota Wild in 2026, as well as two older sisters, Lisa Foligno-Carey and Cara Foligno.

The Foligno family has deep hockey roots, with their father Mike having played in the NHL and later coaching and managing the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Hockey League, where both brothers developed their skills.

Tragically, the family lost their mother, Janis Foligno, to breast cancer in 2009, an event that has profoundly influenced the brothers’ bond and their charitable efforts supporting cancer research.

Lisa, the oldest sibling born in 1984, excelled as a women’s lacrosse player at Canisius College and now works in Peterborough, Ontario, while Cara, born in 1986, is based in Buffalo and also participated in sports during her youth.

In recent years, Nick and Marcus have made headlines as rare NHL brothers playing together on the same team, first achieving this with the Wild and describing the experience as a dream come true.

    Career

Foligno’s career began in junior hockey with the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL, following in the footsteps of his father and brother.

Selected 104th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the fourth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, he turned professional after strong junior seasons, including a standout 2010-11 campaign that earned him OHL Second All-Star Team honors.

Foligno made his NHL debut with the Sabres in the 2011-12 season, quickly making an impact with seven or more points in his first six games, a rare feat in franchise history.

He spent several seasons in Buffalo, developing into a reliable physical winger, before being traded to the Minnesota Wild in 2017.

With the Wild, Foligno has thrived in a checking-line role while contributing offensively at times, including recording his first NHL hat trick in January 2026 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Over his career, he has played in more than 900 regular-season NHL games, accumulating around 148 goals and 188 assists for 336 points, along with nearly 1,000 penalty minutes that reflect his aggressive style.

He has also appeared in the playoffs multiple times, adding further experience to his resume as a veteran leader.

In the 2025-26 season, he continued to log significant ice time while battling through the grind of a full campaign.

    Accolades

Foligno has served as an alternate captain for the Wild, underscoring his leadership qualities in the locker room and on the ice.

His junior hockey recognition includes selection to the OHL Second All-Star Team in 2010-11.

While he has not captured major individual NHL awards like the Selke Trophy, Foligno has been praised for his two-way play, physical presence, and contributions to team success, including strong penalty-killing and forechecking.

His most notable recent milestone remains sharing the ice with brother Nick as Wild teammates in 2026, a rare feat that added a personal accolade to their family legacy.
