Mario Duplantier is a French-American musician, drummer, and artist best known as the longtime drummer for the heavy metal band Gojira.

Born Mario François Duplantier on June 19, 1981, in Bayonne, France, he grew up in the small coastal village of Ondres in southwestern France, surrounded by nature that profoundly shaped his worldview and the band’s themes.

Like his older brother Joe, he holds dual French and American citizenship through their American mother, Patricia, who had Azorean roots and passed away in 2015, and their French father, Dominique, a painter and architectural drafter.

Mario developed an early passion for drumming, initially self-taught before enrolling at Agostini’s drum school to refine his technique.

    Siblings

Mario is the youngest of three siblings in a highly artistic family that encouraged creative expression across visual arts and music.

His older brother, Joe Duplantier, born in 1976, serves as Gojira’s vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter, forming a core creative partnership with Mario that dates back to their teenage years.

The brothers co-founded the band in 1996 and have maintained a close personal and professional bond, often describing an intuitive understanding that allows them to create music with minimal verbal communication.

Their sister, Gabrielle Duplantier, born in 1978, is a fine-art photographer whose work has included family projects and contributions to Gojira’s promotional imagery.

    Career

Duplantier’s career in music began in 1996 when, at age 14 or 15, he co-founded the death metal band Godzilla with his brother Joe, guitarist Christian Andreu, and bassist Jean-Michel Labadie in their hometown area.

The group later renamed itself Gojira and evolved from raw technical death metal roots into a progressive, groove-oriented sound that incorporates atmospheric elements and strong environmental themes.

Mario’s drumming has been central to the band’s identity across albums such as Terra Incognita (2001), From Mars to Sirius (2005), The Way of All Flesh (2008), L’Enfant Sauvage (2012), Magma (2016), and Fortitude (2021).

He has contributed not only percussion but also occasional backing vocals and even guitar during live shows when switching roles with Joe for fun segments.

Over the years, Mario has balanced intense touring with family life, including a period living in New York City with his wife and daughter.

He has emphasized personal growth in his playing, moving away from purely technical displays toward more emotional and purposeful performances, especially after becoming a father and experiencing personal losses.

Mario also pursues visual arts and has released drum solo videos, such as “Movement” and “Cyclone,” that showcase his creativity.

The band’s historic performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony brought global attention to Gojira, with Mario’s powerful playing highlighted alongside the group’s theatrical visuals.

    Accolades

Duplantier won Best Drummer at the 2017 Loudwire Music Awards and has secured victories in Rhythm/MusicRadar awards for Best Metal Drummer, including in 2021.

Additional honors include Drumeo Awards wins, such as Drum Performance of the Year for his “Cyclone” solo, and nominations in categories like Metal Drummer of the Year.

He has been listed among the world’s best metal drummers by outlets like Drummerworld and has received acclaim for his work on albums like Magma, which showcased his refined double bass technique and rhythmic creativity.

Gojira’s collective achievements under the Duplantier brothers’ leadership include multiple Grammy nominations for Best Metal Performance and other categories, with a win for Best Metal Performance in recent years.

The band’s Fortitude achieved strong chart success, and their Olympic performance in 2024 marked a cultural milestone for metal music.
