Marizanne Kapp is a prominent South African international cricketer, widely regarded as one of the finest all-rounders in women’s cricket.
Born on 4 January 1990 in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha), Eastern Cape, South Africa, she is known by the nickname Kappie.
Kapp has represented the South Africa national women’s team across all formats since her debut in 2009 and has also featured in major franchise leagues around the world.
In her personal life, she married fellow South African cricketer and former national captain Dane van Niekerk in July 2018.
She comes from a fitness-oriented family; her father is Pieter Kapp, a businessman, and her mother is Nereda Lamprecht.
Siblings
Marizanne has two sisters, Lee Zaan Seaman and Zania Nortje.
The sisters were raised together in a close and supportive environment that encouraged physical activity and sports.
Their father regularly involved them in fitness routines such as morning swims, evening sprints, and runs.
Zania suffered serious injuries in an accident that left him in intensive care, prompting Kapp to leave a Proteas tour in England to support the family.

Career
Kapp’s international career began in 2009.
She made her Women’s One Day International debut against Australia on 10 March 2009 and her T20I debut against the same side later that year.
Her Test debut came in November 2014 against India.
Over the years she has become a mainstay of the South African side, contributing with both bat and ball in middle-order batting and medium-pace bowling.
She has played in multiple ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups and T20 World Cups, helping South Africa reach consecutive T20 World Cup finals in 2023 and 2024, and the ODI World Cup final in 2025.
Domestically and in franchise cricket she has represented teams including Eastern Province, Sydney Sixers, Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Stars, Oval Invincibles, and Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League.
Notable performances include a maiden Test century of 150 against England in 2022 (the highest individual score by a South African woman in Tests at the time), consistent contributions in limited-overs cricket, and success in high-pressure finals for franchise sides.
She has also taken the first-ever wicket in The Hundred competition.
Despite briefly considering retirement around 2024, she continued playing at a high level into her mid-thirties.
Accolades
Among her major achievements, Kapp became the first South African woman to take a hat-trick in a T20 International, achieving the feat against Bangladesh in 2013.
In the same year she scored an unbeaten century in the Women’s World Cup.
She was named in the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year and has received the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award (June 2022).
She earned Player of the Match honours in the finals of The Hundred (with Oval Invincibles) and the Women’s Big Bash League (with Perth Scorchers).
Domestically she has been recognised with Cricket South Africa awards, including Women’s Cricketer of the Year.
Her longevity is reflected in substantial international appearances, with thousands of runs and over 250 wickets across formats by the mid-2020s, along with key roles in South Africa’s historic runs to global finals.
