Mark Joseph Carney is a Canadian economist, banker, and politician who has served as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada and leader of the Liberal Party since March 2025.

Born on March 16, 1965, in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, he is the son of educators Robert J. (Bob) Carney, a high school principal and later professor of educational foundations at the University of Alberta, and Verlie Margaret Carney (née Kemper), who was a stay-at-home mother before returning to teaching.

The family, of Irish ancestry with roots in County Mayo, moved to Edmonton, Alberta, when Mark was six.

Raised Catholic in a household filled with books and discussion of current issues, Carney attended St. Francis Xavier High School before studying economics at Harvard University, where he graduated with high honours, and later earned master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Oxford.

Siblings

Mark is the third of four children. He has an older brother named Seán, an older sister named Brenda, and a younger brother named Brian.

The siblings grew up in a close-knit family environment in Edmonton after early years in the Northwest Territories.

Brenda Carney married David Sully.

Brian Carney married Julie and has lived in Northern Ireland.

Seán has been associated in family references with a partner named Mimi.

Brian has spoken publicly in support of his brother, describing their tight-knit upbringing with their parents and noting Mark’s tendency to stand up for others and make time for family despite a demanding schedule.

Career

Carney began his professional life in investment banking, spending 13 years at Goldman Sachs across offices in London, Tokyo, New York, and elsewhere, rising to roles that included managing director in investment banking and work on sovereign risk and emerging markets.

He returned to Canada and joined the Bank of Canada as a deputy governor in 2003, later serving as senior associate deputy minister of finance.

In February 2008 he became Governor of the Bank of Canada, guiding the country through the global financial crisis with decisive interest-rate actions that helped Canada recover more quickly than many peers.

From 2013 to 2020 he served as Governor of the Bank of England, the first non-British person to hold the post in its long history, navigating the institution through the aftermath of the financial crisis, the Brexit referendum, and the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After leaving central banking he took on roles including United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, positions in asset management focused on environmental, social, and governance investing, and other advisory work.

In 2025 he entered politics, winning the Liberal Party leadership and becoming Prime Minister, later securing a minority government mandate.

Carney has received recognition for his contributions to economics, public service, and crisis management.

He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

He has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the National Business Book Award for his writing.
