He graduated cum laude from Cornell University with a B.A. in history, earned a master’s degree from the London School of Economics, and obtained a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.

He won a special election to the Senate in 2010 to fill the remainder of Barack Obama’s unexpired term before winning a full term later that year.

As a senator, Kirk was known for bipartisan efforts on topics including sanctions against Iran, support for Israel, and disability rights following his own recovery from a major stroke in 2012.

He lost re-election in 2016 and has since worked in private sectors, including consulting and advisory roles related to global affairs.
