A 20-year-old student at the Maseno University in Kisumu was found dead in his house after a suspected suicide.

Police said Francis Odhiambo, a first-year student at Maseno University, Kisumu died suicide by hanging himself using a sisal rope tied around his neck from one of the roof rafters inside his rented house.

The incident happened on April 2, 2025.

A suicide note was found at the scene, indicating that the deceased had died by suicide due to a lack of support from immediate family members.

Police said they are analyzing the note to confirm if he is the one who authored it.

The body was moved mortuary, awaiting postmortem, police said.

The incident was among three suicide incidents reported to police.

In Mtito Andei, Makueni, one Muthoka Ndunda, 57 was found dead after he had hanged himself with a sisal rope tied around his neck on a tree in a thicket.

No suicide note was recovered at the scene and the motive of the incident is yet to be known.

In Gachoka, Embu County, one Kelvin Macharia Njeru, 24 died by suicide by hanging himself using a sisal rope tied around his neck from one of the roof rafters inside his house.

The motive of the incident was not established and the body was moved to Embu Level Five Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Police say cases of suicide have been on the rise. This comes amid efforts to address the trend.

Police say the trend has been worrying and increasing as up to two cases are reported daily.

The World Health Organization says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.
