Mats Zuccarello is a Norwegian professional ice hockey winger who currently plays for the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League.
He is known for his exceptional skill, playmaking ability, agility, and tenacity despite his smaller stature, earning him nicknames like “Zuccy” and “The Hobbit.”
Born on September 1, 1987, in Oslo, Norway, Zuccarello became one of the first prominent Norwegian players in the NHL and the first from his country to reach the Stanley Cup Finals.
Undrafted, he rose through European leagues before making his mark in North America with the New York Rangers, where he developed into a fan favorite for his creative offense and competitive spirit.
Zuccarello has represented Norway internationally and continues to serve as a key veteran contributor for the Wild, blending high hockey IQ with consistent production into his late 30s.
Siblings
Mats’ siblings include a younger brother named Fabian Zuccarello, who has pursued hockey at various levels, including stints in the Norwegian First Division and college hockey in the United States, as well as a sister named Sandra.
He also has two step-brothers, Robin Dahlstrøm, a former professional player in Sweden and Norway who retired in 2021, and Martin.
Raised initially by his single mother, Anita Zuccarello, who is of half-Italian descent, Mats grew up in a close-knit family in the Løren suburb of Oslo.

Career
Zuccarello’s career began in Norwegian youth hockey with clubs like Hasle-Løren and Vålerenga before he advanced to Frisk Asker and then moved to Sweden’s elite league with Modo Hockey, where he excelled and won the Guldhjälmen as the Swedish Hockey League’s most valuable player in 2010.
Undrafted, he signed with the New York Rangers in 2010 and made his NHL debut that season, scoring his first goal in overtime against the Carolina Hurricanes.
He split time between the NHL and the AHL’s Connecticut Whale early on but established himself as a top-line contributor for the Rangers, helping them reach the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals.
After a brief stint with Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the KHL during the 2012-13 lockout, he returned to New York and posted career-high numbers, including 26 goals and 61 points in 2015-16.
A trade to the Dallas Stars in 2019 was short-lived, as he signed a five-year contract with the Minnesota Wild that same summer.
With the Wild, Zuccarello has thrived as a playmaker, often centering or flanking star players, and has recorded multiple 60-plus point seasons while becoming the fastest player in franchise history to reach 200 assists.
Through the 2025-26 season, he has appeared in over 960 regular-season NHL games, tallying 232 goals and 512 assists for 744 points, along with strong playoff contributions across multiple appearances.
Accolades
In Sweden, Zuccarello captured the Guldhjälmen as league MVP in 2010 and led Modo in scoring.
He has been named Norwegian Player of the Year multiple times, including in 2010 and 2017, recognizing his pioneering role for Norwegian hockey.
In the NHL, he was a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance and sportsmanship and earned selections to the AHL All-Star Game during his early North American years.
Zuccarello also contributed to Norway’s national team efforts and helped the country achieve notable international results.
