An 18-year-old inmate serving time outside Paris has been formally charged after investigators discovered a chilling list inside his prison cell. One of the names on that list? Kylian Mbappé. The discovery has sent shockwaves through France, revealing a sprawling criminal operation coordinated from behind bars.
The suspect, identified as Clément L., is an 18-year-old Franco-Swiss national who was already locked up at Villepinte prison in Seine-Saint-Denis. He was serving time for a string of serious offenses that included armed robbery, pimping, rape, and drug-related crimes. But while he was supposed to be serving his sentence, investigators say he was still running a criminal network from the inside.
It all came to light when prison guards confiscated two mobile phones from his cell. A forensic analysis of the devices revealed a disturbing document: a list of 26 targets. The list included wealthy individuals from across France—footballers, rappers, business executives, jewelers, a Chinese wholesaler, and a Turkish meat wholesaler. But the name that grabbed the most headlines was that of Kylian Mbappé, the French football superstar. According to a judicial source cited by Le Parisien, Clément L. had targeted Mbappé along with a rapper, with the goal of carrying out a future robbery or even a kidnapping if the footballer returned to France.
This was not just a fantasy list. Police believe some of the other targets on the list had already been hit. The investigation that ultimately led to Clément L. began after an armed robbery at a watchmaker’s shop in Neuilly-sur-Seine in April 2026. Two men stole 11 luxury watches worth an estimated €150,000 (around $128,000). As detectives dug into the case, they uncovered a much larger network and traced a significant piece of the operation back to the teenager in prison.
So how was he pulling it off? From his cell, Clément L. used Snapchat under the alias “Lester Z” to stay in constant contact with accomplices on the outside. He was allegedly issuing instructions for attacks and kidnappings, coordinating the gang’s movements, and directing their activities—all while the authorities thought he was safely behind bars.
On August 21, 2026, Clément L. was formally charged in Nanterre, in the Hauts-de-Seine department, with organized robbery. An accomplice was charged alongside him. Now in solitary confinement, he has fiercely denied being the mastermind. He claims he was merely an intermediary—a messenger passing information between an unidentified boss and the people actually carrying out the crimes. In a statement from his isolation cell, he said: “I know the facts are serious… but I’m in isolation, surrounded by madmen and terrorists.” He also revealed that he had dropped out of cooking school but expressed a desire to return and become a chef.
For Mbappé, the news is alarming but ultimately a close call. The plot was discovered and foiled before any robbery or kidnapping against him could be attempted. While the football star was never in immediate physical danger, the case highlights just how easy it is for criminal networks to use social media and smuggled phones to operate from prison—and how even the most famous figures in France can end up on a criminal’s hit list. As the investigation continues, authorities are hoping to track down the remaining accomplices and piece together the full scope of the operation that was being run from a single jail cell.
