The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) Sunday warned that heavy rainfall is expected over southern coastal Kenya due to an expected tropical storm, ‘Chenge’.

Termed as the Chenge residual depression, an area of low pressure in the Indian Ocean, it is said to be moving west at 11 km/h about 500 km north of Madagascar with winds of 55 km/h, gusts up to 75 km/h, and pressure near 1000 hPa.

In a statement on Sunday, Kenya Met said that the storm currently continues to weaken as it moves west across the northern Mozambique Channel.

Despite its weakening, the weatherman cautioned, its proximity to the coast may influence weather conditions and also in parts of Tanzania.

“Heavy rainfall is expected over several parts of the country, with strong winds exceeding 25 knots possible along the south coast on Monday and Tuesday as the system dissipates,” the statement read in part.

Residents in the mentioned areas, including those engaged in marine activities, have been urged to exercise caution, stay stay alert, and take necessary preparedness measures.
