    Michael Joseph Kelly Jr., born on May 22, 1969, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an American actor widely recognized for his performances in film and television.

    Raised in Lawrenceville, Georgia, by his parents Maureen and Michael Kelly, he initially set out to pursue a career in law, enrolling at Coastal Carolina University.

    However, an acting elective shifted his trajectory, leading him to graduate in 1992 with a degree in performing arts.

    Beyond acting, Kelly is a musician, having played guitar in the band Leroy Justice, and is known for his athleticism and lifelong membership in the Actor’s Studio.

    Michael grew up in a close-knit family with three siblings: two sisters, Shannon and Casey, and one brother, Andrew.

    Raised in Lawrenceville, Georgia, the Kelly siblings shared a vibrant upbringing, which Michael has described fondly, noting they had a great time growing up together.

    Career

    Kelly’s acting career began with minor roles in the mid-1990s, including appearances in television series like Lifestories: Families in Crisis (1994), The Jury (2004), and Kojak (2005).

    His breakthrough came with the role of Agent Ron Goddard in The Sopranos (2006–2007), which showcased his ability to portray complex characters.

    This opened doors to more prominent roles, most notably as Doug Stamper, the calculating Chief of Staff in the Netflix series House of Cards (2013–2018).

    His portrayal of Stamper, a role he played across all six seasons, became a defining moment in his career, earning him widespread recognition for its depth and intensity.

    Kelly’s film credits are equally impressive, including roles in Changeling (2008), directed by Clint Eastwood, Dawn of the Dead (2004), The Adjustment Bureau (2011), Chronicle (2012), Now You See Me (2013), Man of Steel (2013), and Everest (2015).

    On television, he has appeared in Generation Kill, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior as SSA Jonathan “Prophet” Simms, Jack Ryan as CIA Agent Mike November, and more recently, Special Ops: Lioness (2023–present) and The Penguin (2024) as Johnny Viti.

    Accolades

    Kelly’s performance as Doug Stamper in House of Cards garnered significant critical acclaim, earning him multiple nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

    While he has not yet won an Emmy, his role in the series, which itself was nominated for 10 Emmys and won three, including Outstanding Director and Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, elevated his status in the industry.

    In 2013, Kelly experienced his first red-carpet moment at the Emmys, where peers praised his work, an acknowledgment he described as deeply rewarding.

    Additionally, his alma mater, Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, honored him by adding his name to their Wall of Fame in 2013, recognizing his achievements alongside other notable alumni like Amy Robach and Jason Elam.
