Michelle Yeoh, born Yeoh Choo Kheng on August 6, 1962, in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, is a globally celebrated Malaysian actress, producer, and activist renowned for her dynamic performances in action films and her trailblazing presence in Hollywood.

Of Hokkien and Cantonese descent, Yeoh grew up in a well-to-do family, with her father, Yeoh Kian Teik, a lawyer and politician, and her mother, Janet Yeoh, a housewife.

Her early passion for ballet led her to study at the Royal Academy of Dance in London, but a spinal injury shifted her trajectory from dance to acting.

Yeoh first gained prominence after winning the Miss Malaysia pageant in 1983, which opened doors to her acting career.

She became a household name in the 1990s through Hong Kong action films, performing her own stunts, and later achieved international stardom with roles in major films like Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).

Beyond acting, Yeoh is a dedicated philanthropist, serving as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme and advocating for causes like road safety, wildlife conservation, and gender equality.

    Career

Yeoh’s acting journey began in 1984 with a commercial alongside Jackie Chan, leading to her debut in The Owl vs. Bumbo (1984).

Initially credited as Michelle Khan, a stage name chosen for its appeal to Western audiences, she starred in Hong Kong action films like Yes, Madam! (1985), Royal Warriors (1986), and Police Story 3: Super Cop (1992), where she performed daring stunts, earning her a reputation as a formidable action star.

After a brief retirement following her marriage to businessman Dickson Poon from 1988 to 1992, Yeoh returned with renewed vigor, reclaiming her birth name and starring in The Heroic Trio (1993) and Tai Chi Master (1993).

Her international breakthrough came with the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), where she played Wai Lin, a role that showcased her martial arts skills and charisma opposite Pierce Brosnan.
