    Early Life

    Miesha Theresa Tate was born on August 18, 1986, in Tacoma, Washington. Raised as a self-described tomboy, she developed a love for competition at an early age. While attending Franklin Pierce High School, Tate joined the boys’ wrestling team, later winning the girls’ state wrestling championship as a senior.

    After graduating, Tate enrolled at Central Washington University, where she was encouraged by classmates to join the school’s mixed martial arts club. Though initially hesitant about fighting, she quickly adapted to grappling and jiu-jitsu, launching an amateur MMA career that ended with a 5–1 record.

    MMA Career

    Miesha Tate made her professional MMA debut in 2007, competing for several regional promotions before gaining national attention. In 2009, she won the Freestyle Cage Fighting Women’s Bantamweight Championship, successfully defending the title the following year.

    Her career took a major step forward with Strikeforce, where she became one of the organization’s top fighters. In 2011, Tate won the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Championship by submitting Marloes Coenen. She later faced Ronda Rousey, losing by armbar in one of the most talked-about rivalries in women’s MMA.

    After Strikeforce folded, Tate joined the UFC in 2013. Though she suffered early setbacks, she rebounded with key victories over Liz Carmouche, Rin Nakai, Sara McMann, and Jessica Eye. Her defining moment came at UFC 196 in 2016, when she submitted Holly Holm to become the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion.

    Tate lost the title later that year to Amanda Nunes and briefly retired in 2016. She later returned to competition, scoring notable wins, including a Performance of the Night victory over Julia Avila in 2023. As of her most recent fights, Tate holds a professional MMA record of 20 wins and 9 losses.
