Two people, a mother and her four-month-old baby, died following a devastating fire incident in Huruma estate, Nairobi, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

According to police, the fire broke out at around 1:32 a.m. in the Ngei 2 area.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the blaze engulfed a one-bedroom house located on the fifth floor of a five-storey building.

Efforts to contain the inferno involved a fire engine, with additional help from members of the public who joined in rescue attempts.

Tragically, a 40-year-old woman and her infant daughter were burnt beyond recognition in the incident. Police say property of unknown value was destroyed in the fire, which is suspected to have been caused by a gas explosion.

The bodies were later moved to Nairobi City Mortuary for preservation and postmortem examination.

The incident has once again raised concerns over fire safety in densely populated residential estates in Nairobi, particularly regarding the handling and storage of cooking gas in multi-storey buildings.

Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing.

Meanwhile, police in Kasarani, Nairobi, have launched investigations after the body of an unidentified person was discovered lying along a roadside on Wednesday evening.

The incident was reported at around 7:55 p.m Wednesday. by members of the public who were walking along Ngomongo–Mwiki Road, near the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) offices within the Kasarani Stadium area.

The witnesses alerted officers at Kasarani Stadium Police Station after spotting what appeared to be a lifeless body.

The body, which had already begun decomposing and was covered in houseflies, was found lying on the ground with no visible physical injuries.

A search conducted at the scene did not yield any identification documents, leaving the deceased’s identity unknown.

The body was moved to Nairobi Funeral Home, where it is awaiting identification and a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Authorities have appealed to members of the public with missing relatives to visit the facility and assist in identification.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
