Police in Bungoma County are investigating a suspected murder-suicide after a 23-year-old woman and her one-year-three-month-old son were found dead inside their home on Sunday morning.
According to the police, the woman’s husband returned home from work at around 8 a.m. on June 7, 2026, and found the house locked from the inside. His wife, identified as Joy Wambui Tabitha, was not responding to his calls.
With the assistance of the caretaker, the door was forced open. Inside, they found Joy’s body lying on a bed alongside the body of their young son.
Police officers visited the scene at Luusajela B Village in Kanduyi Division.
Preliminary investigations suggest the mother may have taken her own life after allegedly causing the death of her child. Investigators recovered assorted medicines from a table in the room and a syringe lying on the bed next to the child’s body.
Authorities noted that neither body showed visible physical injuries. The scene was processed and documented before the bodies were moved to Bungoma County Referral Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Police classified the matter as a pending investigation, with autopsy and toxicology findings expected to help establish the exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
