Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda condemned alleged ethnic slurs made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during the United Opposition’s tour of the Gusii region.
Jhanda described the remarks by the former Mathira MP as “uncouth and deeply regrettable,” accusing him of promoting divisive rhetoric at a time when the country needs unity.
“The Deputy President’s comments were not only inappropriate but also disrespectful to the people of Kisii,” said Jhanda.
During the opposition tour, Gachagua reportedly urged residents to elect a local leader instead of a non-local candidate.
Jhanda said Kenyans are gradually rising above bigotry and self-centered leadership, and urged Gachagua to embrace more sober and inclusive politics.
“Leaders must rise above ethnic politics and foster cohesion rather than inflame tensions,” he said.
The MP was speaking at Kiamabundu in Kisii Central during the inauguration of eight newly constructed classrooms at a local school.
He also called on national leaders to exercise restraint in their public statements, emphasizing that Kenya’s diversity should be celebrated rather than weaponized for political gain.
On education, Jhanda said he is prioritizing improvements to school infrastructure across his constituency, noting that quality learning environments are essential for student success.
He said his office is working closely with relevant authorities to address longstanding challenges facing schools, including overcrowded classrooms, inadequate facilities, and urgent repair needs.
“Education is the foundation of our nation’s future. Our children deserve safe, modern, and well-equipped schools,” he stated.
According to the MP, current efforts focus on renovating aging school buildings, upgrading sanitation facilities, and ensuring classrooms are properly furnished and ventilated.
He also underscored the need to invest in science laboratories, libraries, and digital learning tools to enhance the overall educational experience.
Jhanda noted that consultations with school administrators, teachers, and parents have been key in identifying priority areas.
He added that collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders is ongoing to secure funding and fast-track project implementation.
The MP reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and accountability, promising regular updates on the progress of infrastructure projects.
“As representatives of the people, it is our duty to ensure that every child has access to quality education in a safe and supportive environment,” he said.
