Members of Parliament have been locked out of their offices at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) over unpaid rent amounting to more than Sh50 million.
A legislator, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the eviction, which comes amid growing concerns about delayed government payments.
In a letter dated May 9, the Parliamentary Service Commission appealed to the KICC management to allow MPs back into their offices as efforts to settle the arrears continue. The commission has promised to clear the outstanding rent before the current financial year ends on June 30.
The commission explained that it has a long-standing agreement with KICC to provide office space and parking for lawmakers.
“We request that you allow the members of Parliament to continue accessing the facilities at KICC, including parking at COMESA grounds without interference,” said Clement Nyandiere, the Director-General of Parliamentary Joint Services.
According to the commission, a total of Sh134 million has already been paid in the current financial year. This includes Sh73 million for the 2023/2024 period and another Sh61 million for the first half of the current financial year ending December 2024.
Nyandiere attributed the delay in clearing the remaining Sh50.7 million to budget constraints and slow disbursement of funds by the National Treasury.
He added that the commission is now seeking extra funding to fully clear the rent arrears. A copy of the letter was also shared with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who chairs the Parliamentary Service Commission.
