Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has left for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend key African Union (AU) meetings scheduled for February 11 and 12, 2026.
Mudavadi will participate in the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, ahead of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, which will take place on February 14 and 15, 2026.
This year’s AU Summit will focus on the theme: Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.
Mudavadi said the theme builds on discussions from the second African Climate Summit held in Addis Ababa in September 2025, which followed the first summit held in Nairobi in 2023. He described the focus on water and sanitation as timely and forward-looking, noting the growing impact of climate change across the continent.
According to World Bank experts, climate-related water challenges such as droughts, floods, and pollution could reduce economic growth by up to six percent in many parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East by 2050.
Mudavadi also highlighted past warnings by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who cautioned that competition over fresh water could become a major source of conflict in the future, while also noting that water can encourage cooperation among nations.
On the sidelines of the AU meetings, Mudavadi is expected to hold bilateral talks with leaders from across Africa as he advances Kenya’s foreign policy agenda on behalf of President William Ruto.
President Ruto currently holds several key continental roles, including AU Champion for Institutional Reform, Chair of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change, and Chair of the East African Community.
