Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has been elected the new chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG), succeeding Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi.
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka was elected vice chairperson during a full Council meeting held in Nairobi on October 12, 2026.
The new leadership team comprises the chairperson, vice chairperson, whip and chairs of the various technical committees.
Njuki takes over from Abdullahi, who has led the council since 2024 and was re-elected in October 2025.
“I humbly accept the responsibility of serving as Chairperson of the Council of Governors,” Njuki said after being elected.
The Tharaka Nithi governor is serving his second and final term. He was first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki congratulated Njuki on his election, saying the appointment reflected his commitment to devolution and the work of the Council of Governors.
“Congratulations Governor Muthomi Njuki on your ascension to the esteemed office of Chairman of the Council of Governors. Your election speaks to your dedication and commitment to devolution and your ability to deliver on the vision and mission of the Council of Governors and its stakeholders,” Kindiki said.
He also expressed his readiness to work with the new leadership.
“Looking forward to working with you, the new Vice Chairman Governor Kenneth Lusaka and the various Chairpersons of Committees announced after today’s elections,” Kindiki said.
