Stanbic Bank Kenya has appointed Michael Mutiga as its Chief Executive Officer following approval by the Central Bank of Kenya.

Mutiga takes over from Abraham Ongenge, who held the position in acting capacity from March 2026.

This followed the appointment of Joshua Oigara, who took the role of Chief Executive and Director of Stanbic Holdings Plc.

Central Bank of Kenya approved his appointment on Friday September 11, 2026.

Stanbic Bank said Mutiga will lead the lender on its next growth phase as it targets to strengthen its H1 2026 performance.

Mutiga, a seasoned lawyer and banker, previously served as the Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer at Safaricom PLC. Before his stint at the leading telco, Mutiga was a Managing Director and Head of Corporate Finance for Sub-Saharan Africa at Citibank and also held senior roles at Absa.

While making the announcement on Tuesday, Joe Muganda, Chairman of the Board, Stanbic Bank Kenya, described Mutiga as a respected leader with an extensive and successful career in banking and finance, both in Kenya and across Sub-Saharan Africa.

“His unique experience, combining deep investment banking expertise with strategic leadership in the telecommunications sector, uniquely positions him to steer Stanbic Bank Kenya into the future. We are confident he will build on our current momentum to drive sustainable growth, enhance customer experience, and deliver value to our shareholders,” added Muganda.

In acceptance of his appointment, Mutiga said he would work on deepening customer relationships, accelerating the bank’s digital transformation and partnering with key sectors of the economy to drive Kenya’s sustainable development.

“This is a formidable institution with a rich history in this country and a very strong foundation for future growth. The bank’s recent performance is a testament to the talented team and their commitment to our clients,” he said.

Ongenge will now return to his substantive role as Head of Personal and Private Banking.
