Following a court order obtained by City Hall, at least 250 unclaimed bodies were disposed of last Friday.

County Executive Member for Health Anastasia Nyalita said that City Hall requested permission from a city court in a miscellaneous application no.2 of 2023 to dispose of the dead after the seven-day notification had passed.

“On January 27, 2023, the health services sector published a seven-day notice in the local dailies highlighting 292 unclaimed bodies lay in the various hospital mortuaries,” said Ms Nyalita.

As noted by Nyalita, a total of 42 remains had been located and/or claimed as of the seven-day notice’s expiration.

On February 9, the court issued directives to the health sector authorizing the disposal of the unclaimed bodies.

“The Nairobi County health services has been granted the authority to dispose of 250 bodies that lay unclaimed in various county mortuaries,” she added.

The 250 bodies were subsequently disposed of last Friday in compliance with Public Health Act, Cap. 242.

The most common causes of death in Nairobi that result in bodies being left at city morgues include sudden death, mob justice, suicide, and killings.

The 292 bodies were dispersed throughout the city’s three morgues—Mama Lucy Hospital, Mbagathi, and City Mortuary. The majority of the 178 bodies were kept in the city morgue.

Analysis of the notice reveals that 88 deaths, mostly men, are ascribed to either sudden death, homicide, mob justice, or suicide.

63 males died abruptly, the notice showed. Eight suicides and ten homicides were the main causes of death. Accidents, natural causes, and downing are among the other causes of death specified in the notification.

Records indicate that seven people died as a result of mob justice.
