Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has formally written to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula seeking the recall of Members of Parliament for an emergency sitting to deliberate on proposals aimed at lowering fuel prices by up to Sh27 per litre.
In letters addressed to the Speaker, Nyoro requested that all 350 lawmakers be recalled from recess to consider urgent legislative amendments targeting the rising cost of petroleum products.
“I respectfully write to request your consideration for the recall of the National Assembly from recess, pursuant to its mandate under the Constitution and the Standing Orders, to deliberate on urgent proposed legislative amendments aimed at reducing the cost of fuel in the country,” Nyoro stated in his letter to Wetang’ula.
An emergency parliamentary sitting is an unscheduled or expedited legislative session convened during recess to address urgent matters of national importance.
Nyoro is seeking a special sitting on Monday, May 18, coinciding with a planned nationwide strike by matatu operators and other motorists protesting the latest fuel price increases.
“In the circumstances, I humbly request your office to favourably consider exercising its authority to recall the National Assembly from recess for the purpose of facilitating the tabling, deliberation, and consideration of the said proposed amendments,” Nyoro added.
Parliament is currently on recess, with normal House sittings expected to resume on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
The lawmaker on Friday disclosed that he had already tabled two motions seeking to ease the burden on consumers by lowering fuel-related taxes and levies.
Among the proposals is the abolition of Sh7 from the current Sh25 Road Maintenance Levy, alongside measures to zero-rate fuel products.
Nyoro is also pushing for amendments to the VAT Act to remove the current eight per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) charged on petroleum products and make petrol, diesel and kerosene VAT-exempt.
According to the MP, the proposed changes could reduce the cost of petrol and diesel by Sh15.87 and Sh17.99 per litre, respectively, providing relief to consumers grappling with rising living costs.
The push comes amid mounting public concern following the latest fuel price review announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on Thursday.
Under the revised pricing, the cost of Super Petrol and Diesel increased by Sh16.65 and Sh46.29 per litre, respectively, while kerosene prices remained unchanged.
In Nairobi, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at Sh214.25, Sh242.92 and Sh152.78 per litre respectively, effective from midnight for the next 30 days.
