Nation Media Group (NMG) has announced major editorial changes aimed at strengthening its content strategy and improving its performance across digital and print platforms in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

In a memo dated April 17, 2025, and seen by Kahawa Tungu, Editor-in-Chief Joe Ageyo said the changes are part of a wider effort to improve coordination, embrace innovation, and better serve audiences across platforms.

One of the key changes includes the appointment of a new Executive Editor for Digital Innovation, who will lead NMG’s digital strategy and coordinate content initiatives across all its East African operations.

The position has been filled by Victor Mushi, who previously headed the content team in Tanzania.

Ageyo also announced a merger of editorial responsibilities for both print and digital platforms.

Each lead editor will now be responsible for both the print edition and website of their respective brands, reporting directly to the Managing Editor, Publishing — a role now held by Washington Gikunju.

Additionally, the position of Managing Editor, Audience and Engagement has been scrapped.

Its responsibilities will be shared among different teams to ensure audience needs are integrated across all newsroom functions.

The role of Managing Editor, Production has been renamed Managing Editor, Broadcast and New Media. This role, now held by James Smart, will oversee video content, social media, user-generated content, and emerging formats like social explainers and interactive visuals.

The Managing Editor, Content Hubs role has been renamed Managing Editor, Content Strategy to reflect its expanded function in implementing digital-first strategies. Harry Misiko takes over this position.

A new editorial hub focusing on climate reporting and young audiences has also been established. Zeynab Wandati has been appointed as Editor for Climate and Young Audience, while Dorcas Odumbe becomes Editor for Health and Gender issues.

Other appointments include Alex Ndegwa as Lead Editor, Daily Nation; Jackson Mutinda as Lead Editor, The EastAfrican; and John Kiplagat as Lead Editor, Production.

Caroline Njung’e has been appointed Chief Quality Editor, Kennedy Kimanthi becomes News Editor at the Integrated News Desk, Brygettes Ngana is the new Regional Editor for Nakuru, and Patrick Lang’at will serve as Weekend and Planning Editor.

Ageyo emphasized that the changes are part of a continuous review process aimed at keeping pace with the evolving media landscape.

“As the content landscape rapidly evolves, our newsroom will continue to respond appropriately by constantly evaluating our structures and making adjustments as they become necessary,” he said.
