North Eastern Members of Parliament affiliated with Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party have threatened to arm their people as the government has failed to do anything to protect them.
Fafi MP Barre Shill told the government that they will head into Somalia and buy guns for personal protection.
“We are extremely worried by these events. Life in northern Kenya has come to a virtual standstill. We are tired of crying like babies,” Shill told Daily Nation.
Speaking at Parliament grounds on Wednesday, the MPs claimed that the government is lethargic in its response, something that has emboldened terrorists to attack them, including police officers. The MPs also called out Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery for being untruthful about the security situation in northern Kenya.
“The government should tell us if it has no faith in the region so that it is reluctant to deploy reservists in the region. Nkaissery is busy threatening politicians yet police officers are dying on duty because of poor quality armored vehicles. The government must protect the people in the region or they should instruct us to protect ourselves,” added the parliamentarians.
They gave the government a two month ultimatum to end the al-Shabaab attacks or they arm themselves and their people.
