The National Police Service (NPS) issued a safety advisory warning of heightened flood risks and dangerous conditions across Nairobi and other parts of the country following days of persistent heavy rainfall.

In a statement released Wednesday, the police said the ongoing downpours have already caused significant disruption, with rising water levels in major rivers increasing the likelihood of flooding, particularly in low-lying and downstream areas.

Authorities highlighted the swelling of key waterways within the capital, including the Nairobi, Mathare, Ngong, Kamiti and Athi rivers—all of which feed into the larger Athi River system that is currently at critically high levels.

The NPS warned that the situation remains unpredictable, noting that communities downstream could face flooding even in areas where rainfall appears minimal.

“This downstream effect makes the situation particularly dangerous, as flash floods can occur suddenly and without warning,” the statement said.

The advisory comes amid growing concerns over strained transport networks, with several roads at risk of becoming impassable due to waterlogging. Police cautioned that poor visibility and unstable road conditions are significantly increasing the risk of accidents.

Motorists and pedestrians have been urged to avoid driving or walking through moving water, warning that even shallow currents can sweep away vehicles or individuals.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to remain alert and prepare to move to higher ground if necessary, while closely monitoring updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and other authorities.

The police also called on the public to strictly follow evacuation orders and community alerts, emphasizing that delays could place lives at greater risk.

The NPS said it remains on high alert and is working with other government agencies to respond to emergencies and safeguard lives and property.

Members of the public can report emergencies through the toll-free numbers 999 or 911, or via the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline.

The meteorological department has warned of more rains in the coming days.
