The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has clarified that mandatory physical fitness tests for public service vehicle (PSV) and commercial drivers have not yet been rolled out.
In a statement, NTSA said the tests are provided for under Section 105A of the Traffic Act (Cap 403) but are still under development and have not been implemented.
The clarification follows reports claiming that NTSA had started offering free mandatory eye tests for all drivers in Nairobi in response to an increase in road accidents this year.
NTSA explained that the health initiative held in Nairobi on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, was organised by ENA Coach in partnership with its medical partners and was not part of a national rollout by the Authority.
The Authority noted that similar health outreach programmes have been conducted in different parts of the country in the past, supported by public transport operators, school transport providers and various public and private institutions.
Some of the organisations that have previously partnered in such initiatives include Vivo Energy Kenya, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the Kenya Red Cross, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, NACADA, St John Ambulance, AA Kenya, Equity Afya, Eldoret Hospital, Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital, Karen Hospital and City Eye Hospital.
NTSA said it is currently working with the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to develop a national framework that will guide the medical assessments required for the physical fitness tests.
“We assure the public that the rollout of the physical fitness tests and any related requirements will be communicated through an official public notice and the Authority’s official channels,” NTSA said.
